We implement waste reduction projects to save resources and protect our environment.

At the County, we know that preventing waste and conserving resources is not only good for the environment, but it also saves taxpayer dollars. That is why our Board of Supervisors continues to support waste reduction as a top priority in our policies and initiatives like our Environmentally Preferable Purchasing policy and our Climate Action Plan initiatives.

Our departments seek opportunities to move services and business processes online to save paper. We reuse surplus furniture and equipment through our Property and Salvage department. We also rely on individual County employees to make sustainable choices, such as double-sided printing and copying, and sharing files electronically. But change can be hard, so we use behavior science to inform our sustainability outreach and employee education.

To guide our efforts, we conducted a survey and hosted focus groups to learn what our employees know about sustainability, what actions they are taking, and what is preventing them from doing more. We create specific campaigns using the principles of community based social marketing (CBSM) to overcome barriers and give our employees the support they need to make sustainable choices.
