This waste-vegetable-oil powered car is one of many County alternative-fuel vehicles.

Transportation is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Alameda County. For County government, vehicle emissions from employees commuting to work and traveling on the job account for more than 50% of our carbon footprint. In our fleet of vehicles and in our communities, the County is taking steps toward sustainable transportation.

The County's fleet includes vehicles that run on compressed natural gas (CNG) and waste vegetable oil, more than 140 hybrids, eight all electric messenger vans, and bicycles. The Public Works Agency prioritizes pedestrian and bike safety in the design and maintenance of public roads in unincorporated communities.
