About Fire Chief Sheldon Gilbert

Fire Chief Sheldon Gilbert began his fire service career on July 16, 1986, as a Firefighter with the Eden Consolidated Fire Protection District. On July 1, 1993 Eden Consolidated Fire Protection District merged with the Castro Valley Fire Protection District and the Alameda County Fire Patrol to become the Alameda County Fire Department. Prior to being a Firefighter, Chief Gilbert was a Paramedic. He was instrumental in the creation and growth of the ACFD and established the Alameda County Fire Department Paramedic Program.

Chief Gilbert has a Fire Science Certificate from Modesto Junior College; received his Paramedic training from Stanford University Hospital/Foothill College; and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. He is a certified Executive Fire Officer from the National Fire Academy and is a graduate of the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. He has received numerous public safety recognitions and was named Public Safety Manager of the Year for the development and implementation of a County-wide First Responder Paramedic Program.

Chief Gilbert currently serves as the President of the California Fire Chiefs Association, is a Governor-Appointee to the California EMS Commission and is a co-chair to the Blue Ribbon Task Force. He also serves as a County Fire Department Representative on the FIRESCOPE Board of Directors.

Welcome to the Alameda County Fire Department (ACFD) web page. It is my hope that you will find this site helpful in better understanding and accessing the services and capabilities offered by the ACFD to the communities we serve. The ACFD prides itself on being a progressive and state of the art regional fire service agency that provides a wide variety of services to communities throughout Alameda County.

The ACFD's commitment to the safety and well being of citizens and communities is strong and non-negotiable. We are determined to continually demonstrate our core values to all of Alameda County, not just as a resource to our communities but as members of our communities. The ACFD has an established history of operating as an organization that is committed to efficiency, consistency and results. We hold customer service as our highest responsibility and continue to set the standard as a strategically managed organization and an industry leader in regional cooperation and service delivery.

The men and women of the ACFD are second to none and unwavering in their commitment to protect the lives and property of our citizens.
